Production log 10

Now the deadline is upon us and i am basically done with my editing and i just have to add effects on all the shots that need it, which is pretty much every shot. However I think it has come together nicely and it will be good to look at the music video as a whole. Also the digipak and the magazine advert has been coming to an end and just a slight few changes such as text size and layout which are quick things.

part of the magazine advert showing the text layout and where everything is

I have found difficulties once again with Final Cut as every time I do something with a clip it has to be rendered otherwise it will not be shown and it is worrying that a lot of shots have been un-rendered which makes me fearful of when the final product is viewed that some parts will not be seen. this gives me more of a reason to look into every single part with more depth to make sure there are no faults. One thing that I am disappointed with is that the lip syncing was slightly off at some parts and I know I tried to sync it properly.

When rendering you have to wait for a certain time which can be tedious when done a lot
When clip is not rendered this appears which made me look over what I needed to render before I uploaded it
The project was quite time consuming but hopefully it will pay of at the end as we are all nearly done and viewing our products will be hopefully rewarding. There was a lot of difficulties this week as we were under a lot of pressure to finish everything and to make everything as good as we could make it but I feel my partner and I have worked well under this pressure and we will be able to finish these products within the time limit.

Production log 9

This week my editing has really come along and it is looking quite slick i think. i have progressed a lot because this is the first time i have edited a whole thing by myself and it is definitely the first time I have ever had hands on with final cut. The fact that i have done 95% of the editing so far lets me know that i have progressed quite a lot. Although i have done the majority of the editing it still seems quite plain. So when I asked for feedback from my teacher he had told me some good tips and tricks which I did end up using a lot.

Part of the music video

From above you can see some slight changes I have made to a shot. From a plain looking shot I added a subtle filter to it and added a soft edged black border around the edges. This gives it more of an ambiguous look which i was trying to show anyways through the filming and editing. From this I can say that I learnt how to put filters, transitions and borders on Final Cut which are skills I can take into the future as this is the main editing programme that people use. This made the video more interesting to watch and allowed the audience to be more intrigued.

I also looked into how my partner was doing with the magazine advert and the digipak and they seem to be nearly finished as well and they are looking decent in my opinion.

Production log 8

Editing has become more frustrating this week as every time I need to insert a clip in the middle or before another clip it moves the whole thing meaning I had to keep unlocking and locking the layers which kept annoying me as different things were on different layers and forgetting to lock them could have bad consequences. the fact that the clips would move was quite important as it meant the lip syncing would then be off which is a very important thing in music videos.
What layers look like on final cut
When it comes to the ancillary products they are coming along at a decent pace and it is only the magazine advert that is still in production. Personally looking at the digipak and magazine advert I didn't really see why we needed to have trees in it as it has nothing to do with what we are trying to go for. However now looking at what we have on the ancillary products I guess it does work as the music video does have certain parts with trees and the ancillary products has got the nature aspect to it so it kind of shows the synergy.

digipak with the tree background

magazine advert with nature in background
This will help us boost our marks as we need to show our synergy and our brand throughout so I can safely say my partner has done a good job of working on these products whilst I think I am doing a good job of the editing.

Production log 7

This week I have been continuing to edit the music video whilst my partner was doing the ancillary products. We had also continued filming shots that were needed to fill gaps and this was getting more and more stressful as the deadline was approaching quickly and our editing time was getting shorter and shorter.
Some scenes we had to film
As the deadline is coming up it means my partner and i will have to stay behind after school to get everything done. The magazine ad is coming along to how my partner had expected it which is a good thing. Also on top of this my partner had completed the digipak which made it easier for her to know what sort of things need to go into the magazine ad as she had to create synergy between the products and the audience was supposed to denote a clear brand for the artist.

Production log 6

In this week we have done a great deal of filming. We had gone to central to film all the Leicester Square scenes which was fun but even then I still felt as if things were not working out how I expected them to be. When filming I had to do a lot of takes just to get the correct shot and even then I didn't feel satisfied.

Odeon- Leicester Square

We also re-filmed all the drama studio shots which we had stayed back after school for quite long and we filmed all the house and work scenes. I believe the shots that came out of the house and work scenes were quite successful and i think when it comes to editing it will be pretty good. I just worry that we will not have the enough shots.

I then did go on to do some editing of the footage whilst my partner started working on the magazine advert and digipak. Looking at the work my partner has produced so far i believe the digipak and the magazine ad will look very nice and it will be a successful piece of work. In the editing side, the things I have edited does have gaps in it but that is due to needing more film in those gaps but what I have edited so far is pretty good.

A schedule emphasizing the fact that the actor was only available on certain days.

A downside of this week is that we were supposed to re-film all the shots in central London on Sunday however the weather had prevented us from doing so. Therefore we had to film on a day that unfortunately will cut down on the editing time but it has to be done. It is quite difficult because the actor we need is only available on certain days and those days are the days that i work but we had found a compromise and we are now set to film on a another date.

Production Log 5

This week we have finally started production stages and it has been a decent week. We took pictures for the digipak and the magazine advert and they have turned out quite well in terms of framing and composition, however i feel as if the location needs to be improved greatly.

Taking these pictures did not take long at all and this was due to the fact that my partner and i had already visualized what kind of image we want and all we then had to do was produce the picture.

We did also film some shots but i feel as if we do need to re-film them but i will see that once i upload the footage onto the computer and watch them back. I feel this way because the props we need were not there so it didn't really match the script and i wanted to match the script because the script is a written representation of what my partner and i had imagined.

Production Log 4

During this week we are still in pre-production stages. We are finishing the shooting script and doing the last of the logistics. Overall it is a good thing that we are now finishing pre-production and personally i do hate all the pre production paper work so it is god for me. I found that doing the shooting script is very stressful as you need to know what happens in every shot and you have to go into ALOT of detail from how the camera will be angles to how long the shot will be. the only thing i did like about doing the script was it gave me a chance to visualize what i wanted the music video to be like which is always good fun. When it came to doing the logistics i found it much easier as they were shorter pieces of work and my partner and i could evenly split up this work.

I am happy that pre production is coming to a close and i am excited to be moving into production stages but i fear that it will be very hard being a music video and all. Hopefully it will turn out better than expected and we get a good grade.

Production log 3

This week we have progressed quite a lot in terms of planning. We actually started our treatment and our shooting script. The shooting script includes a lot of detail to it and it is very long to do but if we get this right then when it comes to production stages it will make things a whole lot easier.

There are a lot of things we have to put into the shooting script such as what sort of camera language we are going to use, how long the shot lasts and what the shot means. We need around 150 shots and at the moment we are not near that figure yet. I would like to finish the script by next week but it is likely that we will not finish as we have a lot of work to do. Our idea is very complex and it is hard to be imagining each shot and what comes next, so it is going to take a lot of time to figure it out.

Our treatment was fairly easy as we had to write only a few things and follow the guidelines. The treatment is used so people can get a more in depth idea on what the idea is and how we are going to achieve making a successful music video. The five slides consisted of Audience, Technology, Logistics, Artist & our vision.

Production log 2

This week my partner and I had done the focus group. This was where we asked a range of questions to 7 girls. These questions were not just any questions; they revolved around our ideas on what we should do when making our music video. We had around 8 questions and they were quite open questions therefore we could get detailed answers from our peers. These questions helped us realize what was good and bad about our idea and what we need to change and just generally to see if our idea appeals to our target audience.

From this focus group I had gotten a lot of feedback which was a really good thing; however there was a lot of criticism on our idea. I chose to look at this in a positive light and I took on board their criticism. They did say positive things about the dong and our idea gave them a template for their ideas that they suggested but throughout the focus group they used the theme of the song is jazzy and this helped us think about what we need to improve on.

In the end we decided to completely change the idea that we had. We took everything they said on board and we took it apart and analysed it. From this we thought of a new idea and we stuck to it. Personally I think the new idea is really good but it requires a lot of commitment and hard work.

Focus Group and Evaluation

This is my focus group and we actually got quite a bit of feedback and it was very helpful to us. It allowed us to break down our idea and find out what people thought was good and bad about it. Overall I think the focus group was actually a success, as we got a lot of feedback from our peers and they gave helpful constructive criticism.

When everyone first heard the song, they all said they imagined an idea that was quite “Chilled & jazzy”. This was right at the beginning of the video and they had already said something that was not what my partner and I were thinking of. They then did however warm up to the idea of a girl walking down the street with different costumes as Tanya said “As long as you make it a bit jazzy I guess”. What was really successful is that they expressed their opinions quite well, as they even gave us an insight of what the character should look like in specific detail: “Side parting, hair all down one side”.

The strengths that they said weren’t that many but I feel as if this is a good thing as it will help us a lot when it comes to developing our idea and what we should do as this feedback is from people that are within the age range of our target audience. Also I personally think this song appeals more too mostly females and in the focus group you can denote that it consists of only girls. However this can also be seen as a problem as there are no males the feedback we got cannot be representative of all the males that would listen to their song and we haven’t got any opinions of what males think of it.

The strengths they did say was that our idea can work if we slow it down and make it more chilled and another strength is that they agreed that some effects would work; adding filters but even when they said that they didn’t agree with the filters that my partner had said to use. Dami specifically said to add a blue filter. The girls wanted to go for more of a laid back video where there was rain and Tanya even said maybe a girl and a boy. To me this came off as quite a depressing video but it has made us think about how we can alter our idea and how we can compromise. They also agreed with one idea that we had which was getting her ready at the beginning of the video and then walking out to go somewhere when the tempo gets faster. This supports us and makes it a likely decision for us to actually do that scene of getting ready at the beginning.
However majority of the video was them voicing their opinions of what they think we should do. Ama suggested an idea of having a character walking down the street in a gown with red lipstick and a masquerade mask on and going to a party. This is a very different idea to our original idea of having it quite funky and having a girl changing costumes. It made us see the song in a different light.

They also then moved onto giving ideas of maybe the whole video should be her getting ready as a lot of R&B songs do this. A thing that was very well done is that they gave examples such as Eunice giving the example of Leona Lewis or even Jada talking about Diamond rings by Chipmunk. This will give us more to look at for inspiration which can influence our idea more. They also gave us feedback on our locations and gave us ideas of where to film. They were quite committed to their jazz idea so they said to film in a jazz bar and if we were not allowed in then we can improvise and use the school hall as it has the props we need. This was quite helpful but I do not think we will be moving into the direction of going very jazzy.

The weaknesses were the fact that they were against masks and dancing but this wasn’t a huge thing as we were quite sceptical on those ideas anyways so it will be easy to just get over the idea. Overall there was a lot of feedback to take in and it was quite helpful as I think it has developed our idea to add a slight narrative to the video to make it more interesting and calmoing down with the upbeat ideas that we have.

Focus group questions

PLAY THE SONG

1) Listening to this song, what ideas come into your head what would your own music video consist off if you had to make one to this song?

2) What do you imagine the main character to look like? What colours she would wear? What costumes? Also why do you think she would look like this?

PITCH IDEA- TALK ABOUT DIFFERENT LOCATIONS AND CLOTHING, GETTING REACTIONS

3) So this is our idea, what do you think of it and do you think it actually fits the song? Can you imagine this idea actually happening? If you do not then why not?

PLAY RUDIMENTAL SONG

4) Looking at this song, you can see that it has a documentary feel to it, and that's what we want to do as we are filming people's genuine reactions therefore nothing is staged. What do you actually think of this video? What aspects do you like about it? Do you think we could successfully do this documentary style in our video? If you can think of any difficulties what are they?

PLAY NICKY ROMERO SONG

EXPLAIN MEANING OF CONCEPTUAL- BASICALLY RANDOM, IT IS INCONGRUOUS

5) This song has the same sort of idea we are trying to portray; it contains random people dancing with each other. Do you think something of this conceptual style would fit our song choice? Can you imagine us walking in different clothes getting peoples reaction and just generally being a bit surreal, a bit out there? If not then why?

6) If you had to film this video using our idea, so walk around getting random peoples' reactions; where would you suggest filming? Do you have any locations in mind? With the locations you have said why do you suggest these locations?

TELL THEM WHAT LOCATIONS WE HAVE THOUGHT OF AND SEE WHAT THEY THINK OF THEM (ON A ROOF, WINTER WONDERLAND ETC.)

PLAY SNIPPETS OF EACH SONG

7) Looking at parts of these songs do you think these sorta effects would work in our video? There is the effects of reversing the actual video and the effects of changing the visuals of the video. If you think they would work where do you think we could incorporate it? If you don't think we can use the effects then why not?

EXPLAIN HOW WE WE'RE GOING TO MAYBE USE THESE EFFECTS

8) This work is from past students that were in our school, do you think our idea is too similar to theirs? If so how can we change it up to make it different? If it's not then how is our idea different?

9) Looking at this image, what would you change about it to make it fit?

TALK ABOUT COSTUMES, LOCATIONS, WHAT SORT OF GESTURES ETC.

10) What is your favourite music video and why? Try and give a lot of detail if possible.

Production log 1

My idea had  got quite a bit of positive feedback from my peers. My idea consisted of 3 friends getting into a shootout emphasizing how guns are bad and this amplifies the lyrics of the song as the song is called "Put down that gun". However I could not go onto making anything more of my idea as my partner Damanjyot had a song which was completely opposite to mine menaing there was no way to merge our two ideas therefore we finally both decided to go with Damanjyot's song and idea.

The song (Changing times- Shauntia Toussaint) has a calming tone to it and we chose to go with an idea of a girl walking down the street  looking quite surreal and us capturing peolpes genuine reactions to her. This makes the video into a documentary style video and we had gotten inspiration from "Waiting all night - Rudimental" as that had a documentary feel to it.

This week we learnt about Digipaks and Magazine ads and we had found what to actually look for when analyzing them and knowing how to analyse them. We also learnt how to analyse music videos in more depth and how our ideas are getting influenced by these ideas. We also learnt about how synergy is incorporated across the artists' products and videos which ultimately creates a brand for them.

Pitch & Pitch Feedback

Music Pitch

This is my pitch for the idea I had for my own music video. I think I was quite confident in actually presenting my idea however I did feel nervous throughout. Hopefully it didn’t show but I quite liked my idea and I was quite optimistic that my peers would actually like my idea as well.

Music Pitch Feedback

This is the video of the feedback I had received on my idea form my peers. Overall I think it was really good feedback from everyone and there was only a couple of weaknesses that were in there. The strengths of my pitch were that everybody really liked the narrative that I had in mind. My teacher and Tianna had said “I think the link with the boy on the bike could be really good and as Tianna says it’s something a bit more different, a bit more positive than a traditional hip hop video.” My teacher really liked the idea I had of this boy that walks in at the end and picks up then puts down the gun and she even gave me suggestions of putting him in the video from the beginning as a cameo. That idea was probably the best idea I had in the whole video as it really emphasised the message of the song.  After I had talked about what my storyline is Halima had said “I think the storyline is quite deep and it suits how harsh the song really is” This backs up the feedback that everyone had said something positive about the narrative of my work. This really helps me because when writing up about it after the narrative was the main key concept that I could write about. Another thing that was said was that the narrative actually had a meaning to it making it more original. I think the main piece of positive feedback I got was from my teacher; she said that if I add a cameo of this boy then it would make the audience want to watch it multiple times and in my view I think that is quite important.

When it came to weakness Kieran had talked about that my narrative was thought out pretty well, however it really depends on how I edit it which means there will be a lot of hard work in post-production. Also my teacher had said that there was no need for me to have 3 characters to match the lyrics and I should just have normal characters that don’t actually need a status and use them and also I would need to recast and if I was going to have someone play a teacher then I should get someone older to actually play the part. Another thing is, judging from the questions, it is evident that I wasn’t that clear with how I explained my idea as in the feedback I had to clear things up to make my peers understand what I was trying to get at.

My partner in this project is Damanjyot and she has a completely different idea to mine. The songs are complete opposites and the idea itself cannot be matched in any sort of way. Due to this we could not mix our ideas and we had to select one idea and stick with it all the way. The idea that we chose was Damanjyot’s and I feel we can work quite well on it. Her idea consists of getting people’s reactions to her character walking down the street. At first I thought this was quite boring but I had thought of new ideas to incorporate into it to make it more interesting and I now think it can work pretty well. Damanjyot herself is going to be the main star in the video and I will be the director and I think it will work because she suits the song and with my knowledge of camera angles and how to use them makes us a good team and the outcome at the end will hopefully be better than what we thought.

These two videos portray the same sort of idea as the idea my partner and I have for our music video.

Lyric analysis - V.I.T.A.L Emcee- "Put Down That Gun"

Target audience

The song

This whole song is about being rebellious and tries to portray how guns are bad .The chorus follows the lyrics of how average people on the streets have one which emphasizes the fact that it is so easy to get one. In the first verse he talks about how the streets are filled these people with violence on their mind. One of the lyrics are "Monkey see Monkey do" connotes that people imitate what they see which is describing the city. Towards the end of the first verse it talks metaphorically about death. "Now you're dropping, calling on god cuz the sky is falling" This is saying that the soul is going towards to god as he has died and assuming from the themes of the song, that person is shot dead.
The second verse starts talking about more action and how things actually happen in life and how people react. "Repetitive psycho shoots his wife, his kids then himself with a rifle" This is probably the most meaningful line as it actually creates a vivid image in your mind and that line itself can portray the message they are trying to show.

Music & Tempo

The soundtrack is hip-hop and you can denote this from the lyrics as it is basically a rap song. The tempo is consistent through out, it goes straight into it right from the beginning and throughout the tempo does not change. The only thing that changes gradually is the meaning behind the lyrics  as it gets more aggressive however the actual beat of the song stays the same. Right at the end the volume of the song decreases and it slowly dies out bringing the song to an end.

How I would use the song in a video

From these lyrics you can clearly see that the artist is trying to show a message to if i incorporate this into a video then I would show a narrative to emphasize the  point the artist is trying to make.

V.I.T.A.L Emcee-Put Down That Gun Lyrics

Chorus
And all the kids say, the President's got one,
The cops they got one,
My favourite rapper got one,
You need to put down that gun,
You need to put down that gun,
And all the kids say, the President's got one,
 My teacher's got one,
My favourite rap star got one,
Put down that gun,
You need to put down that gun,
Bang, bang, bang,

Verse 1:
I done seen them preachers in pulpits,
Heard rappers with full clips,
Who pull quick and teach the kids to believe in this bull-ish,
The heart of the city beats for these thieves and these culprits,
While their leaders run around for their facetious indulgements,
It's a vicious cycle, I just sit through it and observe,
Like a live Doppler scanning from helicopters,
 I'm hearing mausbergs, 45s, and 22s,
Ain't got no kind of clue—monkey see, monkey do,
 But monkey what monkey who,
I heard you're quick to brag on pulling triggers, but who's the one that's been pulling you,
Young minded so your lack of experience has up tightened, now you run around the streets like you're bulletproof,
But uh-huh that's two shots past your spinal column,
Now you're dropping, calling on God cuz the sky is falling,
So ashes to dust, Earth back to the universe comes in thirds,
And you'll see that Father Time was watching,

Chorus

Verse 2:
And bang, bang is how it goes,
Some blasts from an assassin creep to crash through your windows,
And all your boys drop or dash as fast as the wind blows,
And you're the only cat to see the last of your kinfolk up in thin smoke,
And you say you're a menace God,
A heat seeker sweeping streets, bent on some vengeance God,
The kind of cat who'd bring the reaper to a renaissance,
Until you're caught up feeding that devil exactly what he wants,
 Now, it's like 360 degrees,
And the future's predetermined by futures previously,
And you can see this story on any TV at 3,
Immediately as the media sees it to be,
 In the same old cycle,
Repetitive psycho shoots his wife, his kids and then himself with a rifle,
So that's why I'm holding close to mines, cuz when I go,
It’s gon’ be on both feet, locking this mic like a maestro.

Narrative

Narrative devices

Twist - AFI- Silver and Cold

A twist is something unexpected and it surprises the audience.

1:51 - Man whose thinking of suicide

3:35- An explosion happening on the streets

In this video there is clearly a twist because throughout the video the centre of attention is the man who is on the edge who is about to commit suicide and it shows how his friends are running to go and save him; however the twist comes in near the end when you see that his friends actually die in a explosion and he just walks off and doesn't even commit suicide. This can make the audience actually quite confused or even shocked.

Flashback - Justin Timberlake- Mirrors

A flashback is when the protagonist is looking back into the past

1:12- Old people who are the main people
1:25- Flashback to the past when they were young

In 'Mirrors' it follows the story a old husband and wife and how the wife is looking back onto her relationship with him and this causes many flashbacks. This creates more depth for the characters and this helps the audience become more emotionally invested into the video.

Pathetic Fallacy -Bruno Mars- Grenade
2:13- The rain matching the mood
In this song, there is a very depressing tone to it as he is talking about all these things he would do for this girl but then gets turned away at the end. There are plenty of shots where Bruno Mars is standing in the rain and this adds to the mood of the song. This adds the intensity to the video making it more interesting for the audience.

Todorov

Todorov created a narrative theory where he said was 5 different parts to the narrative:

  1. Equilibrium- State of normality
  2. Disruption - Something damages the equilibrium
  3. Recognition - The character recognizes the disruption
  4. Restoring the equilibrium- Trying to solve the problem
  5. New equilibrium- A new state of normality.
The Calling- Wherever You Will Go

Equillibruim (0:26) - Right from the start you see the girl looking at a picture of her and her boyfriend and then at 0:26 you see she has a tattoo of her boyfriend's name on her arm.

Disruption (1:14) - At 1:14 you can clearly denote that her boyfriend is sleeping with another woman and this causes a disruption in her life as he is cheating on her

Recognition (1:30) - At 1:30 the woman walks in seeing her boyfriend cheating on her and she recognises the disruption

Trying to restore equilibrium (1:56) - The protagonist is seen throwing all her boyfriend's clothes out of the door and she is seen smashing his things inside the house. This is seen to be her way of trying to repair the damage done to her.

New equilibrium (3:03) - The protagonist is seen walking out of her house with a new boy showing she is now happy and she has restored her equilibrium.

McKee

McKee is another person who has his own theory on narrative. He also says there are 5 stages to it.

  1. Inciting incident
  2. Progressive complications
  3. Crisis
  4. Climax
  5. Resolution

Drake- Hold on, We're Going Home

Inciting incident (1:24) - The protagonists girlfriend gets kidnapped and this causes a disruption in the lives of the characters.

Progressive complications (2:56) - It turns out that the kidnapping was part of a revenge scheme and things get worse when the protagonist comes into a room with all his friends to find a load of guns that they are going to use which will no doubt make the situation worse.

Crisis (4:24) - The characters step outside the car and start shooting at everyone. This is the crisis as when the character sees all the people that are involved in her kidnapping they all go on a shooting spree.

Climax (6:21) - At this point the protagonist has come  face to face with the antagonist and then shoots him in the head as the antagonist kidnapped his girlfriend and then went on top of her before he got shot.

Resolution (6:44) - At the end of the video you see the protagonist and his now saved girlfriend walk out looking happy which means they have resolved their problem and created a new equilibrium.

Genre

Genre is a style or a category of a particular text. It helps us differentiate and identify between different sorts of texts. E.g. Hip-hop and R&B are two different types of genres in the music industry.

3 types of genre

R&B- John Legend-All of me

John Legend- All of me is a typical R&B song, it has the conventions that other R&B songs have.

2:25 - Topless protagonist
0:33- John Legend singing

Typical R&B songs have dominance in the black ethnicity; majority of the time the protagonist is of a black ethnicity and this can be seen in other music videos such as all of the Rihanna songs or even Chris Brown songs. On top of this the protagonist is seen topless in this video which is a typical convention in the R&B genre. Men are normally shown topless and always wearing jeans.

2:19- Love being shown
1:56- Girl barely wearing clothes

A main theme in the R&B genre is love and this song is all about love. In  the image above you can clearly denote the two characters making love in the shower and this portrays the theme so accurately. Most r&B songs are about love and it is a recurring theme throughout each music video. Also no matter what the tempo is of the song or the mood is girls are always shown to be more sexual. An example of this is shown in the image above where the girl is clearly not wearing any clothes and is using the duvet to cover herself. This is seen a lot and it portrays women as sensual people and are only there to be seen as that.

Hybrid genre- FUSE ODG ft Sean Paul- Dangerous Love- Hip-hop & Afrobeat

A hybrid genre is a mix of two genres, Dangerous Love mixes Hip-Hop and Afrobeat together.

3:24- Chants his name in the same tone all the time
In Afrobeat there are always chants in each Afrobeat song and this is what makes up the genre. In Dangerous Love, Fuse chants his name in every song but what makes it unique is he chants his name and all the things afterwards in the same tone as he does in all his other songs and in turn this turns into a chant. Fuse's music are all Afrobeat songs and he says the same chant in all his songs such as Azonto.

2:08- Girls partying and in revealing outfits
You can tell that it also has Hip-hop in the song because partying scenes are always seen in the genre and so are girls with minimal clothing. In the image above you can denote that there is a party with all the people and also you can tell there are revealing outfits by seeing the girl on the left. With these conventions in place it easy to define the genre as Hip-hop.

Sub genre- Route 94- My Love-  House music

House music was originated from dance music making it a sub genre. House music is basically electronic dance music.
0:36- DJ in the house
In house music it is typical to see shots of a DJ playing the music and not all videos have this. In dance videos they barely show DJ's, however in house music they always show the DJ just to let us know it is house music and it adds more of a dancing feel to it. There is more of a electro dance to it when the DJ is shown and the colours add to this.
0:43- A lot of people dancing in the club
Another thing that is typical in house music is you see a lot of people in the video dancing. In Hip-hop or R&B videos you always see around 10 people dancing however in house music you see a whole shot filled with people dancing and the shot in the image above is a high angle shot and you can denote all the people in that shot are dancing and there must be over 20 people.

Generic conventions

Pop- Problem- Ariana Grande ft Iggy Azalea

Problem is a music video that conforms to the conventions of the Pop genre.

2:09- background dancers on sides- Rita Ora- I will never let you down
0:02- In centre with dancers behind

Mise-en-scene- In a typical pop song you always background dancers who support the main singer and the majority of the time you see them singing on a set. Above there are two images of two pop songs. On the left is 'Problem' by Ariana Grande and you can clearly see that there are background dancers who are in sync and they are symmetrically set out as well as the fact that they are on a set and the protagonist is in the centre of the shot. On the right is 'I will never let you down' by Rita Ora and this is another pop song which shows the exact same thing with the symmetrical background dancers and the singer in the centre and is placed on the set. This backs up the point that having dancers on a set makes up the Pop music video genre.

0:52- Timber- Ke$ha
0:04- Random shot of Ariana Grande's face

Narrative- In pop videos there is always a set piece of random shots of the singer's face not really doing much but smiling or looking at the camera. This is a recurring thing as it never actually has any relevance to the video. As well as that there really is no narrative to pop videos, normally it is just shots coming together to make a good compilation of scenes. On the right is another example of the same sort of thing from 'Timber' where Kes$ha is just smiling at the camera.

0:29- Chris Brown- Loyal
2:27- Ariana centred with guys around her

Representation- In pop videos it is quite different than other videos. Majority of the time in pop videos the girl is the dominant sex and the men are going after the girl whereas in a hip hop video it is always seen as the men are the dominant sex. The image above denotes Ariana Grande as centre of attention whilst there are men all around her whereas in other genre videos you see the male in the centre of attention with the girls around him. On the right is a image of a hip-hop song which you can compare with the pop song as in the hip hop video the boy is surrounded by girls but in the pop song the girl is surrounded by boys.
0:42- "One Less problem without ya'"
0:05- Rita Ora- How We Do

Sound design- When it comes to pop songs the lyrics of the song varies but they all actually have one thing in common, which is talking about life things. An example for this is that in 'Problem' they talk about the problems that were in life and in 'How we do' the opening line is "Let's party and bullshit". This just shows that the lyrics really talk about things that teens and young adults go through in life whereas in R&B they talk about money and success etc.

0:46- Back to the shot of them dancing

Editing- The editing style is very similar in pop videos. There are a lot of cuts but they always cut to the same settings that we have already seen before, the only thing that changes is what they are doing in that setting. The image above shows the singer dancing on the same set we see the song open with showing that there is a repeat of settings.

Genre themes

0:12- opening line
Teen angst- The first line in the song is "Hey baby even though i hate ya! I wanna love ya!" This shows the theme of teenage problems because it portrays how teenagers can be double minded when it comes to relationships and how it can cause frustrations. Also it shows how confused teens can be.

1:12- Talking about love
Love/romance- Mid way through the song the lyrics "Say you love me, i get a bit breathless." This shows the theme of love as she is talking about how she feels when the boy says he loves her. Also in the image above you can denote that the boy and girl are staring at each other and normally a boy and girl being together connotes love.
